It takes more than two to tango!

Formulas towards successful romantic relationship range from one that is family-free to one that is strongly bound by families. While some cultures can be family-free when it comes to marriage and all the decisions made related to it, Thai culture is different. When you get married, it's not just the two of you, but families! Today, modern Thai youngsters however sit on the fence between the two cultures depending on which formula benefits them the most and at what time. First, they claim to be western so that they can get away with all concerns from their families. But when they soon found out that their marriage does not seem to work out, they come back to families for their financial supports. Families then take this as the reason for their intervention in the first place, saying they are the stakeholders of such marriage. This creates the on-going family intervention cycle of marriage. The cycle itself is not really the cause of a problem, but the inability to make decision as to which formula to opt for in the fist place, that is whether to go west or be Thai. If they want to be western, be it and be self-reliant and responsible for their own deeds. If they want to be Thai then, they should listen to their stakeholders. Sitting on the fence can be problematic.

My experience as "a married person" is quite positive. I and my partner learn a lot on our relationship. We agree that our marriage remains healthy not only because we love each other but we also understand and respect each other. P' Moo/ Sakul
